Abstract
The presentation will examine contemporary Indigenous musics, defined as recent musical phenomena in which Indigenous communities have been appropriated and resignified popular music genres, including as rock, rap, punk, and reggae. In the context of Mexican ethnomusicology, the question of how to continue the in-depth, systematic, and ethnographic study of traditional music for newer sonorities and social settings has been discussed. The presentation will include two case studies from Chiapas and Querétaro, which will serve to illustrate the challenges and insights of ethnomusicological tools such as musical systems, unstructured interviewing, semiotic analysis, orality and mass media approaches.
