Erasmus+ Mobility
Diese Seite auf Deutsch anzeigen
Erasmus+ and other mobility programmes offer musicology students at the University of Vienna straightforward and financially supported opportunities to gain experience abroad whilst on their degree programme (outgoing). Conversely, musicology students from universities outside Austria can also participate in visiting programmes at the University of Vienna as part of Erasmus+ (incoming).
The first source of information for requests regarding student mobility is the International Office at the University of Vienna. On its website, you will find information on Erasmus+ study exchanges, practical courses and other programs. The International Office also offers online information sessions at regular intervals, as well as in-person consultations.

Outgoing Students
Musicology students (BA, MA) have the opportunity to study at the following European partner universities through the Erasmus+ programme:
Belgium (Leuven)
Germany (Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Köln, München, Osnabrück, Leipzig)
France (Nancy, Paris)
Ireland (Maynooth)
Italy (Milano, Pavia, Roma)
Netherlands (Amsterdam)
Poland (Wrocław)
Sweden (Stockholm)
Switzerland (Zürich)
Slovakia (Bratislava)
Spain (Barcelona, Madrid)
Czech Republic (Brno)
Selection criteria
If the number of applications received exceeds the number of exchange places available at a university, selection will be based on the following criteria:
- Formal requirements are met
- Study performance and progress (the introductory and orientation period must have been completed)
- The content and reasoning behind your motivation as set out in your application letter
If there is a high number of applicants, students at an advanced stage of their studies will be given preference over those with fewer semesters completed; where study progress is equal, students with a higher grade point average will be given preference.
Traineeships
For musicology students in particular, an Erasmus+ Traineeship abroad can be an attractive option alongside classical student exchange programmes.

Incoming Studients
Welcome to the Department of Musicology! Most courses at our department are taught in German, so German language proficiency is recommended. However, each semester we also offer a number of English-language courses (on a variety of topics), which are marked as such in u:find.
Below you will find some additional information beyond the general guidance for incoming students available on the website of the University of Vienna’s International Office.
Information on selecting courses
The courses offered by the department can be found in the course directory under SPL 16 Musicology. Exchange students may, in principle, attend any of the courses on offer (subject to registration). Two notes to keep in mind:
- It is recommended that incoming students do not enrol on any courses from the introductory and orientation period (StEOP).
- Introductory seminars (PS) are aimed at BA students and are completed with a presentation and a written paper of 10–15 pages. Seminars (SE) are designed for MA students; advanced BA students enrolled in Vienna attend seminars in order to write a BA dissertation. Exchange students on a BA programme may also attend a seminar, which they complete with a presentation and a written seminar paper of 20–25 pages.
Registration for courses and examinations
For details of the procedures and deadlines for registering for courses, please refer to the relevant information on the page Degree Programme. Lectures (VO) are concluded with a written exam, for which you must register.

Information for exchange students nominated for disciplines other than musicology
(fachfremde Mitbelegung)
Exchange students who have not been nominated for our field of study but would nevertheless like to take courses from the musicology programme may enrol on lectures (VO). If, due to a particular interest in the subject, you would like to take a course of a different type (Übung, UE), please contact the lecturer of the course and the mobility coordinator.
