The Institute of Musicology of the University of Vienna was founded in 1898 by Guido Adler. With its four chairs (Early Historical Musicology, Modern Historical Musicology, Comparative Musicology/Ethnomusicology and Systematic Musicology), ten full-time research assistants, 20 lecturers, project and administrative staff and around 900 students, it is among the largest institutes of musicology in the German-speaking area. The institute and the Musicology Library are located in Hof 9 of the University Campus in the 9th district of Vienna, in the immediate vicinity of 14 other university facilities.
