Abstract
This lecture will explore how music and vocalizations function as tools of communication by investigating the neural substrates underlying emotional responses to music. It will address interpersonal resonance and the brain’s processing of melodic features in speech, vocalizations, and music. The discussion will critically examine whether humans possess innate aesthetic sensibilities and psychophysiological reactions to musical elements, with particular attention to responses elicited by diverse musical forms such as dissonance, atonality, and expressions of sadness. Insights into communicative functions of music will be presented, highlighting its capacity to convey specific semantic and affective information analogous to language. Furthermore, the lecture will emphasize the universality of music's emotional impact, underscored by shared neural mechanisms. Several ERP and neuroimaging studies will be reviewed, including those employing paradigms related to incongruence detection and the N400 component.
