Abstract

Devagan is an ethnographic documentary resulting from six years of collaborative research with Newar interlocutors in Bhaktapur, Nepal. The film explores the ritual performance of Nava Durgā, a Hindu tradition practised by a group of men from the Banmālā caste of the Newar community. Originating in 1512, the dancers and musicians — referred to as devagan, meaning “a group of deities” — are regarded as human incarnations of the nine manifestations of the goddess Durgā.

The documentary unfolds through the lived experiences of three devagans from the same family. The grandfather, the chief devagan overseeing rituals, recounts the mythological narrative of Nava Durgā. This tale comes to life through the performances of his son-in-law and grandson — both actively engaged in the tradition.

Devagan offers a nuanced exploration of this living practice in its contemporary context, exploring themes such as local cosmologies, ritual embodiment, and the socio-cultural challenges confronting the continuity of the Nava Durgā tradition. Through the intergenerational lens of its protagonists, the film invites reflection on the resilience and transformation of cultural heritage over time.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with director Shan Du.
