A study of flute timbre with acoustical descriptors
Untersuchungen zum Klang der Querflöte mit Hilfe von Signalanalyse-Techniken

(Vortrag in deutscher Sprache)

After giving a definition of the concept of extended techniques, a classification of most playing modes on the flute based on musical gesture and organological principles will be given. Then, two experiments using acoustical descriptors will be presented. In the first one, samples of several flute timbres have been recorded, and acoustical descriptors have been extracted using the Timbre Toolbox (Peeters et al. 2011). Acoustical timbre spaces resulting from a principal component analysis performed on the data show what are the most important acoustical features to distinguish timbres and playing modes. In the second experiment, the zsa.descriptors library in Max (Malt and Jourdan 2008) is used to study the variations of spectral acoustical descriptors during different kinds of vibrato and fluttertongue on the flute, as well as during transitions between contrasting timbres such as pitch bends, vowel changes, and aeolian tones.
