This presentation aims to counteract the trivialization and suppression of non-Western musical instruments from less-industrialised societies, perpetuated through the influx and reification of Western industrially produced instruments in the global music scene. African traditional instruments are, therefore, used in their original form, e.g. the xizambi (video); and/or as prototypes for the development of what I consider “Contemporary instruments”, e.g. the ximbvokombvoko to mbvoko (video).
As shown above, the instruments were successfully used in contemporary musical contexts in compositions and performances, as much as in the teaching of music and musical concepts in the various levels of music education, contributing towards a more coherent and comprehensive artistic and scientific discourse in music.
