Update: Unfortunately, the event has to be cancelled. We hope to be able to welcome the two speakers at a later time in the academic year.
The Musicology Department at the University of Vienna is proud to host a double lecture on popular music by husband-and-wife team Ann Powers and Eric Weisbard, who will share their exciting new work on popular music with us.
Powers, a leading music critic at NPR Music, will discuss her forthcoming book, Traveling: On the Path of Joni Mitchell (2024). The biography grapples with the singer-songwriter’s complex cultural mythology and transformative impact on popular music, while reflecting on the unique relationship between biographer and celebrity.
Weisbard, a scholarly authority on US popular music, will talk about his latest book Hound Dog (2023), which unpacks the fraught racial and commercial legacy of a chart-topping single synonymous with rock ‘n’ roll king Elvis Presley, though originally recorded and popularized by R&B singer Big Mama Thornton. He will also discuss his editorship of The Oxford Handbook of Popular Music.
